Abstract: With this project, The Habitat Foundation, addressed the need in boosting Ukraine’s capacity to mobilize biodiversity data and to publish in to GBIF. Ukraine is one of the largest countries in Europe (603,628 km2), yet digital georeferenced biodiversity data from it remain scarce and hardly accessible. GBIF contained about 193,671 georeferenced occurrence records from Ukraine at the start of the project, and most of these records have been provided by other countries. To improve the access to biodiversity data for Ukraine, the project will assist the digitization and standardization of biodiversity data from private datasets and museum collections, facilitating the publication of more data, resulting also in building capacities to mobilise biodiversity data and to make it accessible for research, cooperation and nature conservation. As the project is realised with Ukrainian nature conservation and research organisations and people, publishing biodiversity data will make them part of the global community contributing to the knowledge on nature in Europe. The digitised Ukrainian biodiversity data will benefit from secured storage and the authors will be involved in international research, nature conservation work and publications on biodiversity.
The project will assist Ukraine in (1) Translating in Ukrainian the already popular there biodiversity data portal and mobile app iNaturalist (Results here) and the vernacular names of most of the native taxa, which will be integrated also in the Catalogue of Life; (2) Mobilise more biodiversity data from Ukrainian museum collections, herbaria, and scientific literature by involving and training researchers to digitise and publish new private data sets in GBIF (at least about 170 000 new Darwin Core standardized biodiversity data records. Results here); (3) Further promote and mainstream citizen science and the publication of data in GBIF. Results here.
This project will result in increase of available findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) data on biodiversity in Ukraine, promote biodiversity science, demonstrate the importance of citizens involvement in nature research and conservation, and to mainstream publishing biodiversity data. Reliable FAIR biodiversity data support species and area conservation, helps understanding changes in biodiversity and informs management decisions. The goal is also to assist more organisations to become independent publishers in GBIF and more Ukrainian researchers and citizens scientist to become part of the international community contributing to the better knowledge on nature and its conservation.
